Balance of Good Health

All food and drink provides us with energy and other nutrients, many of which we need to live, grow and maintain our bodies.

So eating a wide variety of food will help to ensure we are getting the right amounts.

Because our bodies prefer carbohydrates as their main source of fuel, a high carbohydrate, high fibre diet (one that has good proportion of fruit, vegetables, bread, rice, cereal or potatoes for instance) is better for us than a high fat or high protein diet. Carbohydrates and protein also contain less energy than fat does, so a high fat diet makes it easier to take in more energy than you are using up across the day.

The trick is making sure we keep that balance right. With so many tasty foods around nowadays, it isn’t always easy, but by using a little common sense you can make a real difference to your diet… and your health.
