History of Hovis
The first loaf to be made with nutrient rich wheatgerm. The first to advertise on TV. The first without a crust… the history of the Hovis brand is a history of new ideas and innovations designed to bring our baking know-how to our range of white, wholemeal and wheatgerm breads.
Hovis in 1970
Hovis changed its advertising agency and within two years had introduced the nostalgic theme by Dvorak that became such a prominent feature of the Seventies and Eighties. Together with the famous film director, Ridley Scott, the agency produced a series of commercials that won the hearts of the public. The now famous ‘Boy On The Bike’ commercial made at Gold Hill in Shaftesbury, Dorset, in November 1973 won five awards and became part of national television history. The nostalgic Hovis commercials produced during the decade 1972 - 1982 won more than thirty international awards. ‘Hovis - as good for you today as it’s always been’ was the message, and proved that Hovis had certainly stood the test of time. The ‘Boy on the Bike’ advert was voted one of the top 50 best TV commercials of all time in a recent Channel 4 programme.
